Thunder rolls for Fully Loaded championship title
Published Fri 24 Sep 2021
The Emmsee Sportswear Thunder have taken out season three of Softball SA’s Fully Loaded Tournament, defeating Minor Premiers CPC Angels 16-10 in an absolute bomb-fest.
Having finished a close second in the standings following the regular fixtures, the Thunder had to first get past Bob Burns Blinds Phoenix to win their way into the final.
Travelodge Aussie Spirit representative Steph Trzcinski got the Thunder off to a perfect start, striking out two batters and allowing just the single run via a walk in the top of the first inning. The Phoenix defence was up to the task though allowing only the single run themselves to keep scores locked at 1-1 following the first frame.
Trzcinski stepped out of the circle in the top of the second but maintained her influence on the game, catching a fly ball into shallow right field and firing it back home to capture the Phoenix in a rundown for a double play to end the top of the second with scores locked.
Thunder got to work in the bottom of the inning bringing in three runners for a 4-1 lead before again shutting down the Phoenix line up and winning their way through to the grand final.
Georgia Hood’s three bombs in the regular fixtures saw her take out the CPC Homerun Championship, but with Trzcinski, Amber Hood and Sophie Roberts tied on one, a homerun derby took place in between finals to decide the minor placings.
Everything Trzcinski touched turned to gold as she smoked 11 bombs in 60 seconds for outright second, Amber Hood and Roberts split third place with three apiece.
On to the final and it was the Thunder who opened the scoring off a wild pitch from Georgia Hood before Chelsea Robinson gave her side a commanding lead with a grand-slam in the top of the first.
Not to be outdone, Georgia Hood went yard with the very first pitch of the inning for a grand-slam of her own to close the Thunder’s lead to just one run heading into the second.
The Thunder kept rolling however adding three more to their total before Lana Kaesler fired yet another grand slam, for an eight-run buffer, leading 12-4 into the bottom of the second.
They say good things come in threes though and Georgia Hood stepped up yet again for the Angels delivering the third grand-slam of the night as Sophie Hoyle followed up with a bomb of her own to keep their final alive with a 12-10 score line heading into the final inning.
The Thunder added four more runs in the top of the third as Trzcinski shut down the Angels with three straight strikeouts in the final frame, taking out the game and championship with a 16-10 victory.
