Steph Trzcinski Begins Her Next Adventure in Japan

Published Tue 29 Mar 2022

Australia's Steph Trzcinski is off to share her softball talents with the world.

In the coming days, Steph will begin a 12-month contract as an assistant coach at Municipal Ota High School, located in Ota City, a special ward in Tokyo, Japan.

Ota City is familiar to Australian softballers, with the Aussie Spirit having spent time there as part of their 2020 Olympics campaign. The relationship that developed between Softball Australia and Ota City Council led to the council inviting Australian players to coach in Japan.

While Steph was part of the initial Aussie Spirit squad, she missed out on being selected for the Olympic team, and this will be her first time visiting the country. In addition to working as an assistant coach for the high-school softball team, Steph will also work as an English teacher's aide throughout the day.

The former Australian Under-19 National Champion will bring her experience coaching South Australian teams to the role, having coached the Under-16’s while also playing at Nationals over the past two years. Steph has also coached at high schools and in development clinics in SA, with a focus primarily on pitching and catching.

With her working day beginning after the morning period, Steph also wants to maintain her own training while in Japan, so she can continue to develop as a player.

"I'm hoping I can train with a team while in Japan and catch up with people I've met through my years playing in America," said Steph.

With high levels of competitiveness and an emphasis on precision in Japanese softball, Steph aims to take on as much as she can while in Ota City, saying, “I feel like I may learn more than what I will be able to teach!"

Steph will document her experiences for Softball Australia while in Japan, giving an insight into her day-to-day life while living away from home, with plans for a player takeover and live videos on the Softball Australia social media platforms.

"I understand how it's quite different, so I will try and document as much as I can," said Steph.
