Spirit prepare for must-win game against Mexico

Published Mon 26 Jul 2021

It’s a simple equation for the Aussie Spirit, win or go home against Mexico tonight at Yokohama Baseball Stadium, 8:00pm (9:00pm AEST), with the opportunity to compete for a fifth Olympic Medal on the line.

Australia and Mexico will complete the round robin fixture of softball at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with the winner to advance to the Bronze Medal game against Canada on Tuesday afternoon.

Host nation Japan get the opportunity to defend their Olympic title 13 years after the fact when they take on USA Tuesday night for the Gold Medal game, the pair played out a preview today when they met today, US prevailing in another walk-off win.

The Spirit put in their best performance of the tournament so far against USA yesterday, taking the softball powerhouse to extra innings with a vast improvement to their defensive game.

"I'm very proud of our girls. We've had some challenging games here and to come out and take them (United States) to the eighth inning, it's a great game of softball,” said Aussie Spirit Head Coach Laing Harrow.

"Tarni (Stepto) threw a whale of a game for us and, obviously, (Monica) Abbott, (USA) is one of the best if not the best in the world and to take her to the eighth... At the end of the day we didn't get the win, we're disappointed in that we had the opportunity, but I can't say enough about our group today how well they played."

After errors cruelled the Aussies in their games against Japan and Canada, they were able to remain unblemished against the US, keeping them right in the game behind a stellar pitching performance from 21-year-old Tarni Stepto.

Spirit bats took three hits from Monica Abbott and worked her over beautifully to record the only run against USA at that point in the tournament.

Australia will need to take all of their positives from the USA thriller into tonight’s do-or-die game after Mexico look to carry momentum from a 5-0 routing of Italy to put themselves in the Medal frame.

Pitcher Dallas Escobedo earned the shutout for Mexico, allowing just one hit and four strikeouts in seven innings work. On the offensive end, the Olympic debutants bats ran hot, recording nine hits off Italy, something the Spirit will need to be wary of tonight.

The loss ends Italy’s tournament, and they’ll now play for pride against Canada in their final fixture.

Australia will take to the diamond at 8:00pm (9:00pm AEST) tonight, catch the action live, free and in HD on 7Plus.
