Published Tue 25 Mar 2025
Softball Australia is proud to announce that seven of our talented umpires have successfully achieved their World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) certification, marking a significant milestone in their officiating careers. These individuals have demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and commitment to the sport, and we congratulate them on this outstanding achievement.
Our newest WBSC-certified umpires are:
• Claire Austring (NSW)
• Joel Grimes (NSW)
• Jessica Morley (NSW)
• Leith Roberts (ACT)
• Stuart Tyler (VIC)
• Brett Tyler (QLD)
• Alan Walsh (QLD)
Each of them recently attended their WBSC certification seminar in New Zealand, where they underwent rigorous assessments, skill development exercises, and practical evaluations to earn their international accreditation.
A Transformational Experience in New Zealand
For many of the umpires, the WBSC certification seminar was more than just an assessment, it was an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with others who share their passion for the game. Alan Walsh reflected on his experience, highlighting the invaluable camaraderie and cultural exposure:
“What I enjoyed about the experience was how open everyone was to each other and sharing their ‘tips’ with others. It was great to learn a little bit about the Māori culture and language. I also loved the camaraderie amongst the group, and I am truly grateful, not only for the opportunity I was given but also for the chance to expand my softball whanau. Looking ahead, I’m focused on maintaining the standards I have set and look forward to showcasing my umpiring skills at a higher level.”
The Road to WBSC Certification
The journey to WBSC accreditation is not an easy one, requiring months of preparation, both physically and mentally. Jessica Morley shared insights into the rigorous lead-up to the certification seminar:
*“In the lead-up to WBSC certification, we had regular monthly Zoom meetings, and as we got closer to the seminar, those became weekly sessions where we’d go over scenarios, mechanics, and rule knowledge. During our Australian Nationals, I focused on refining my mechanics and applying feedback I received. I also worked closely with my mentor to sharpen key areas of my officiating.
Fitness testing was a big part of my preparation and I kept pushing to improve my results each time. Between nationals, I umpired at my home state championships, which gave me more chances to work on my rotations and mechanics alongside other WBSC members. Leading into the seminar, we’d go through weekly case plays and practice presenting them, sharing ideas and knowledge within our WBSC squad.”
This level of dedication is a testament to the professionalism and passion of these umpires, who have worked tirelessly to reach this prestigious level of officiating.
The Future of Umpiring in Australia
With seven new WBSC-certified umpires, the future of Australian softball officiating is brighter than ever. These individuals will have the opportunity to represent Australia on the international stage, bringing their expertise and dedication to tournaments around the world. Their success also serves as an inspiration to the next generation of umpires striving to reach the highest levels of the sport.
Softball Australia extends its congratulations to Claire, Joel, Jessica, Leith, Stuart, Brett, and Alan. We look forward to seeing their continued contributions to the game and celebrating their future achievements on the world stage!
