Porter calls time on international duties

Aussie Spirit captain and three-time Olympian Stacey Porter has confirmed she will step away from Australian representative duties following her Tokyo 2020 campaign.

The decision is not a shock to many close to Porter who previously stated publicly Tokyo would be her final outing for her country, but after confirming to media in a press conference following the Aussie Spirit’s final game at the Olympics, the proud Kamilaroi woman hailing from Tamworth can officially hang up the cleats for Australia.

“I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with Aussie Spirit, I’m sad not to get the result and sad I won't lace up with them again,” and emotional Porter told media at Yokohama Stadium on Monday night.

“I’m very proud of the girls… I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and they’re in good hands with Laing (Harrow, Head Coach).”

The veteran of 446 games for Australia, an international record in the game, said she has confidence in the Aussie Spirit who will no doubt bounce back after a tough Olympic campaign.

“There’s a few girls hanging around and they’ll continue what we started, so I’m excited to see what can come next for them.”

Playing in her third Olympics is something Porter won’t take for granted, she said she understands how fortunate they’ve been to even be in Tokyo at a Games like no other.

Having the sport’s elite level broadcast live back home to future generations of Spirit players is invaluable to softball’s profile.

“I’ve said throughout the whole campaign, we’re very luck to be able play during a time like it is at the moment.

“Just to have softball back on the TV in Australia, it’s been a really long time since the kids of Australia have seen quality softball on TV.

“It’s great to be able to put on a show, unfortunately, we’re not there in the Medal match which is why we came here, so that’s disappointing.”

Porter hopes to continue playing professionally for her Japan Club SG Holdings and will return to the league after a short trip back to Australia following the Olympics.
