Phoenix rise as Angels survive for Grand Final berth

Published Fri 17 Sep 2021

Bob Burns Blinds Phoenix made a late charge for Softball SA’s Fully Loaded minor premiership but the CPC Angels have clung onto the top spot to punch their ticket to next week’s grand final showdown.

The Phoenix came to play in the final round after only tallying the single competition point in the opening four games.

They piled on seven runs in the first inning and never looked like getting run down, adding another nine runs throughout the second and third innings while holding the dangerous Angels line-up to just six for a 16-6 score line and collecting five competition points in the process.

Phoenix picked up where they left off in game two against Emmsee Sportswear Thunder as Bel White drove in a runner at the top of the order, they added a further six to race away to a 7-0 lead.

Thunder couldn’t close the gap with the game finishing 9-2, four more competition points going the Phoenix’s, finishing the regular fixtures with a flourish.

With an automatic berth through to the Fully Loaded Grand Final on the line, there was plenty to play for in the Thunder and Angels final match-up of the night.

In order to win their way through to the Final, the Thunder needed to win by five runs to deny the Angels a losing team competition point, which would be enough to secure their spot.

The Angels started hot with a three early runs in the first frame before the Thunder struck back off the bat of Steph Trzcinski driving in two runners off a hard hit single, followed by two more RBIs from Chelsea Robinson, they added one more before the end of the inning to take the lead 5-3.

A scoreless second inning from the Angels piled on the pressure as the Thunder extended their lead to six and in the box seat for the Thunder.

Georgia Hood’s stellar tournament continued though, as she stepped up in the clutch in the top of the third with bases loaded and two outs.

The Travelodge Aussie Spirit squad member smoked a grand slam just inside the first base foul line to claw back four runs and putting the Angels back in the Grand Final, a spectacular catch on the fence from Trzcinski stealing another homerun ended the inning.

Hood shut down the Thunder with three quick outs from the circle to keep the all important margin to two runs 9-7 in the Thunder’s favour, meaning the Angels finish on top of the ladder with 14 points.

The end of the regular fixtures also saw the CPC Homerun Competition taken out by Hood courtesy of her three dingers in six games, Trzcinski, Amber Hood and Sophie Roberts sit tied with one and will duke it out in a homerun derby in between finals next week to finalise the positions.
