Today's daily wrap of games from the 2022 Open Men's National Championship:
Game 1: Queensland Patriots defeat Victoria
A must win game to keep their tournament alive, the Queensland Patriots were first to score in the 3rd innings off a sacrifice fly by Julian Jemmott, scoring Shannon Goffer. Victoria responded in the 4th on a huge home run by Jayden Bamford. Back to back hits in the 5th including a two run RBI from Riley James gave the Patriots what would be a game winning lead 3-2. Ryan Smith went the distance for the Queenslanders, giving up 5 hits and striking out 7 Victorian batters.
Game 2: ACT 89ers stop Queensland Patriots title run
The ACT 89ers jumped right out of the blocks, scoring three runs in the 1st innings. ACT catcher Josh McGovern signalled the 89ers intent, launching a home run over centrefield on the second pitch of his at bat. Josh White, Matt Wickham, Matt Harrow and Jarrod Bradbury combined to score ACT’s only other runs of the game. Jay Selu and Adam Folkard shared the pitching duties for the ACT 89ers, with Folkard pitching 3 innings, striking out 6 batter and giving up 2 hits. The ACT outhit Queensland 8 to 4, to set up a grand final rematch against NSW.
Championship Game: Jack Besgrove leads NSW to the 2022 John Reid Shield
NSW are the 2022 Open Men’s National Champions, defeating the defending champion ACT 9-0 in a dominant performance in the Grand Final today. Jack Besgrove pitched another amazing game for the Blue Bloods, notching 11 strikeouts and giving up just 1 hit across five innings. The game was evenly poised early on, but the 4th inning proved to be the turning point. NSW gave up 6 runs in the inning, capped off with a home run over centre field by James Darby. Unsurprisingly, Besgrove picked up the Grand Final MVP for leading the Blue Bloods to victory.
