Summary: Under 23 Women

New South Wales continued their good form from yesterday, recording wins over South Australia (5-2) and Victoria (7-0) in the early part of the day. The Blue Bloods broke both games open in a single innings, scoring four runs in the 5th against SA, and six runs in the 3rd against the Big V. Alyssa Connell, Nicole Connacher, and Breanna Evans all performed well with the bat.

Victoria recorded their first win of the tournament in a 7-0 win over Western Australia, with Natasha Holt and Emily Fry both notching three RBIs. However, the Big V finished the day with a loss, going down against the home state. The top order did most of the damage for SA, with Abi Jorgensen, Georgia Ballard, and Taylor Chillingworth combining for four runs in a 5-2 result.

Western Australia’s pain continued in the afternoon, as they found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-1 score line against New South Wales. Three runs in the 6th inning effectively shut the door on the game, with Sarah Diener, Zara Yari, and Amber Frost all batting in runners for the Blue Bloods.

However, Day 2 arguably belonged to Queensland, who finished the day 3-0. The top of the line-up led the team to a 10-6 win over WA, with Mackenzie Peebles and Tayla Evans combining for three runs and four RBIs. The Queenslanders were made to earn their 6-5 win over SA, with the deciding run coming in the bottom of the 7th where a Tallulah Civoniceva single allowed Rhiannon Kemp to score.

Queensland's day was capped off with a 2-1 win over NSW in the final game of the day. After scoring their only runs in the 1st inning, Queensland pitcher Emilee Solomon did enough to keep the tiring Blue Bloods to just five hits and one run while registering eight strikeouts.

Day 3 What to Watch For

With four games tomorrow, WA have a chance to break their duck, especially in their opening game against the Big V. Meanwhile, Victoria’s credentials will be tested in their other games against NSW and Queensland. South Australia also has a winning record after two days, and their loss to Queensland could easily have gone the other way. Meanwhile, despite the loss to Queensland late on Day 2, the Blue Bloods played four games in the day and could be forgiven for fatiguing late against one of the stronger teams in the competition.

However, with more than one round completed, the picture that is emerging from the tournament is that Queensland and NSW are favourites. NSW have given up just eight runs in five games, while Queensland have scored more runs than any other team (28). The teams split their results and do not meet again in the regular rounds, but with SA fighting to stay in touch, NSW and Queensland can’t afford to drop any unexpected results on the penultimate day of competition.
