Summary: Under 16 Women

New South Wales booked the first spot in the 2022 National Championship Grand Final, thanks to solid defensive effort led by pitcher Jayda Lorigan. Lorigan gave up just three hits and one run across the seven innings, as NSW suffocated Queensland in the 4-1 win.

South Australia was ahead 4-3 going into the bottom of the 7th inning and on the verge of upsetting Western Australia in their sudden-death final. However, defensive fielding errors cost SA dearly. They let in two runs in the final frame, as WA scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the 5-4 win.

Queensland also had to fight back from a run down with two innings to play in their Preliminary Final against Western Australia. A Sophie Coster double in the 6th inning allowed Jeorjah Minniecon and Caitlyn Hosking to score and give the Blue Bloods the lead, and the home team held on at the top of the 7th to advance to the Grand Final with a 6-5 win.

A cracking encounter decided the Esther Deason Shield. Queensland took the ascendency in the 3rd inning with three runs, only for the home state to answer with five runs in their next two frames. Queensland clawed back a run in the 5th inning, but the deciding moment came in the bottom half of that inning, with the Blue Bloods piling on five runs to lead 11-5. Queensland responded with another two runs but that was all they could muster, as NSW held on for an 11-7 win. Kate Luyten named the MVP, with two runs, three hits, and two RBIs.

Summary: Under 16 Men

Queensland advanced directly into the Grand Final after edging out New South Wales in the first final of the day. NSW pitcher Joel Byrne kept Queensland scoreless through the first five innings, but two fielding errors by the home state let in a pair of Queensland runners in the 6th, and the visitors then kept the Blue Bloods scoreless at the top of the 7th to hold onto a 2-1 win.

15 runs in the space of three innings by Victoria put an end to South Australia’s tournament, as the Big V came away with a 20-11 win in their 3rd vs 4th playoff. Troy Hotere-Moana had an impressive four runs, four hits, and three RBIs from six at-bats for Victoria, while Matthew Bedwell and William Kronk also knocked in four runners each.

NSW earned their way into the Grand Final on the back of another solid pitching effort by the home state. Austin Gooden pitched 12 strike outs and gave up only one run through seven innings, with Gooden also scoring one of the Blue Bloods four runs. Joel Byrne was solid with the bat for NSW as well in the 4-1 victory, knocking in two RBIs.

The Blue Bloods claimed the Arthur Allsopp Shield in style, storming to a 10-1 win over Queensland in the Under 16 Boys Grand Final. The home state was on top from the start, ahead 7-1 over the first three innings. The Blue Bloods added another three runs in the 4th, before closing the game out in the 5th inning. Austin Gooden was named Grand Final MVP, leading the batting line-up with three runs, two hits, and three RBIs from four at bats. Joel Byrne was also impressive from the pitching circle, giving up one hit and one run from five innings pitched.
