Summary: Under 23 Women

Queensland hit the ground running in their opening game against New South Wales, scoring three runs in their opening at bat, but the Blue Bloods immediately responded with two runs in the 2nd inning, followed by another four in the 4th. Bridie Murphy closed it out from there for NSW, pitching five strikeouts and just one hit over the last three innings in the 6-3 win.

The game between the home state and Victoria was in the balance for the first five innings, with no runs and barely a hit by either team. The decisive moment came in the bottom of the 6th, where South Australia scored three runs, highlighted by a Peyton Daniels double that resulted in two RBIs. Victoria had runners on base in the 7th but couldn’t capitalise, SA getting home 3-0.

Queensland and Victoria were in the 6th inning when rain halted play, and under the rules of play the game was called in Queensland’s favour, ahead 7-3. Queensland did most of the damage in the 3rd inning, rounding four runners including an inside the park home run by Jessica Rohde. Queensland’s Chelsea Zunker continues to shine in her third Nationals, pitching six innings and five strikeouts.

The game between SA and WA was also called early when the rain came, the home state ahead 3-0 in the 7th. Taylor Chillingworth had an RBI for SA in the 1st, followed by two more RBIs in the 5th thanks to a Peyton Daniels double. However, Millie Fidge was the difference, pitching 12 strikeouts and conceding just two hits in six innings pitched.

Day 2 What to Watch For

The wet weather meant only four games were completed on Day 1, adding two extra games and more workload to the athletes and Day 2. Teams and coaches will be stretched as they manage the additional games, and rotations will become all important. With so few games played on Day 1, it is difficult to get a read on the early frontrunners, although South Australia scored two important wins.
