Call for Applications: Steelers (Australia Open Men’s) Head Coach

Softball Australia and the Steelers Softball program is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our coaching team as the Open Men's Head Coach. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and shape the future of our men's softball program as we transition from our previous Head Coach, Laing Harrow. Laing will continue in his role with the Women's Spirit team and remain a mentor for the Steelers Head Coach, ensuring continuity and a strong connection between the two programs.

As the Steelers Open Men's Head Coach, you will play a pivotal role in the development and success of our men's softball program. Reporting to both the National Pathways Manager, Clare Humberstone, and Laing Harrow, you will have the opportunity to lead, mentor, and inspire our talented athletes as they strive for excellence in the sport. This appointment is a two-year, fixed-term position that will conclude in December 2025. There will be a review point at the conclusion of the WBSC Men’s World Cup: Group stage in 2024 to assess the progress and direction of the program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the coaching and development of the Steelers Open Men's team, fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Collaborate closely with the National Pathways Manager and Laing Harrow to align coaching strategies and program objectives.
  • Develop and implement high-quality training programs, ensuring the continuous improvement of athletes.
  • Prepare the team for domestic and international competitions, with a particular focus on the upcoming WBSC Men’s World Cup.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to athletes, promoting their holistic development on and off the field.
  • Contribute to the overall growth and success of Softball Australia's high-performance program.

Who We're Looking For:

  • Have extensive experience coaching at an elite level.
  • Exceptional understanding and expertise in Softball.
  • Possess strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide athletes to excel.
  • Be clear and articulate communicators of coaching philosophy and strategies to athletes and support staff.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in developing and executing high-performance training programs and competition strategies.
  • Show a passion for holistic athlete development, both on and off the field.
  • Be willing to work collaboratively as part of a coaching team to achieve program objectives.
  • Thrive in dynamic and evolving sports environments, open to change and continuous learning.

This is classified as a volunteer position, however there is a $10,000 honorarium available to the successful candidate, as well as all travel, accommodation and uniform costs for the coaches to be covered by Softball Australia.
