Besgrove's no-hitter the highlight in Aussie Steelers win over Venezuela
Published Mon 28 Nov 2022
Six runs in the first three innings and a no-hitter from young star Jack Besgrove gave the Steelers another win, extending their unbeaten run to three.
The 18 year old hurler struck out every member bar one of the Venezuelan opposition, tallying up fourteen strike outs in a dazzling display.
Matches aren't just won on by pitching however, and the Steelers hitters brought patience to draw five walks and score five runs in the first two innings. The Venezuelans turned to Frank Ugas, their third pitcher for the game, who turned in a solid 4.1 inning, 1ER, 5K performance.
For the Steelers Beashel, Shailes, McGovern, White and Jemmott all went 1-2 while Marshall Kronk backed up his heroics of the previous night with a 2RBI single.
Steelers Head Coach Laing Harrow congratulated his team and Besgrove, saying "For me the best thing I saw was our pitcher Jack Besgrove – he had a tough night last night and for him to come out tonight and throw a no-hitter against the Venezuelans was a great effort from him.
"I just love how we get runs early, the guys are up for the game and we set the tone for ourselves and I'm very pleased with it.
"I think we can improve. At times we are chasing a few pitches so that is an area we can improve on.
"There’s a lot of positivity – the team culture – the boys have been excellent. We want to maintain that and focus on the processes.
"We are not looking too far ahead – we want to take the competition one day at a time, one game at a time. We have Canada tomorrow and that will probably decide who takes two wins into the Super Round.
"We’ve got to get up again – we are up against quality opposition and we need to prepare as best we can.
"We were loud the whole game which is a standout. A few guys got the opportunity to get into the box – I haven’t been able to do that for a bit so it was good to see that and of course to see the young fella out there throw a no-hitter was special to see."
Coming up on Tuesday: a huge matchup against the only other undefeated team in their pool, with the Steelers taking on World number 3 Canada at 11:30am AEDT. Canada beat South Africa 11-0 on Monday with a five-inning no-hitter from Ty Sebastian.
