Australia looking to lift as they take on Canada
Published Sat 24 Jul 2021
The Aussie Spirit are back in Tokyo and will play their first of three round-robin games at Yokohama Baseball Stadium today to take on Canada.
After leaving Fukushima with one win and one loss under their belt, Australia faces another tough test against an experienced Canadian line-up.
Australia and Canada have played 92 times in international softball since 1949, winning 60 of those games, the rivalry between these two teams sets up a must-watch game for Aussie fans back home.
Canada was victorious over the Aussie Spirit the last time they played at the 2018 Women’s World Championships in Japan, comfortably accounting for the Australians 12-0.
The Olympics are a different beast though, and Australia has never been defeated by Canada on sport's biggest stage, their last match-up at the 2008 Beijing Olympics ending 5-0 in their favour.
Canada goes into the third round of Tokyo 2020 with a 0.213 batting average, on day one, they defeated Mexico and went down 1-0 to world champions, USA, on day two.
Jenn Salling is the best of the Canadian hitters and is a key player in the game today.
Head Coach, Mark Smith has rotated their pitching roster throughout the games, so expect the Spirit to face multiple pitchers, led by ace, Sara Groenewegen.
For Australia, the bats will need to be hot from the first pitch. Leigh Godfrey and Taylah Tsitsikronis are in great form in the box and will need some more Aussie hitters to fire when needed. The defensive display against Italy will need to continue against Canada.
