Aussie U18 & U23 Men's Tour to New Zealand Wraps with Pride, Purpose, and Promise
The Australian U18 and U23 Men’s softball squads have concluded a high-intensity international tour in New Zealand, marking another significant chapter in their development on the world stage. While New Zealand took top honours at the end of the tournament, the campaign provided invaluable experience and growth for both squads as they continue their journey toward future international success.
For the U23 Men’s team, the tour served as a key stepping stone on the path to defending their World Cup title in 2026.
“Reflecting on the tournament, there’s so much to be proud of,” said U23 Men's Head Coach Scott Sunley. “On the field, our players showed impressive resilience and adaptability under pressure. Off the field, the camaraderie and the way they supported each other in those high-stakes moments really stood out. It’s not just about individual skill—it’s about how the group comes together as a unit. The coaching staff and support crew also deserve enormous credit for fostering a strong and focused environment.”
Looking ahead, Sunley emphasised the importance of growth and continuity.
“Now it's about maintaining that momentum. We’ll keep developing squad depth, fitness, and our adaptability to different styles of play. If the team continues to progress at this pace, I’m confident they’ll be a real force at the 2026 WBSC U-23 World Cup.”
For U23 Team Co-Captain, Cody Smith, this tour held particular significance, as it marked the end of his time in the age group.
“As defending world champions, this tour was crucial for our program,” Smith said. “Facing world-class opponents like New Zealand gave us the exact kind of high pressure scenarios we’ll encounter again at the 2026 World Cup. While I won’t be eligible next year (age), I’m incredibly confident in the talent and character of the group—both those who played this week and those still to come. We’ve got a squad full of hardworking, selfless individuals who live the values of the Aussie Steelers family. That’s a recipe for success.”
Fellow Co-Captain Jy Thurstun also reflected on the challenges and rewards of the tour.
“It was a fast turnaround after Nationals in Queensland, so we had to work hard with limited prep time,” Thurstun shared. “From standout on-field performances to off-field moments that built lifelong bonds, the tour had its highs and lows—including battling some tough weather! But that’s all part of it. Playing a team of New Zealand’s calibre is the best preparation we can ask for heading into the World Cup, and I believe in this group 100%. We have the talent and heart to go all the way again.”
The U18 Men’s team also gained valuable international exposure, with their efforts forming a critical foundation for future elite development. The tour provided a platform for emerging talent to step up, connect with senior pathways, and represent their country with pride.
As both squads return home, focus now shifts to training, development camps, and final preparations for a massive 12 months ahead. With their eyes firmly set on the 2026 U23 World Cup and beyond, the Aussie men’s softball program is building something special.
