AIS Be Heard – A Support Service for People in High Performance Sport

Published Fri 26 Nov 2021

Softball Australia are pleased to support the Be Heard campaign, a free, independent, and confidential support service from the AIS for current and former athletes, coaches, and staff in high-performance sport.

As a national sporting organisation, Softball Australia has an obligation to make sure everyone within our high-performance community can safely share their experiences and seek support if they ever need it.

Softball Australia prides itself on how our high-performance staff and athletes are treated within our organisation, but we also appreciate those in high-performance may feel more comfortable seeking independent support at times.

The main priority is that support is available when needed.

Softball Australia CEO David Pryles offered a strong endorsement for the Be Heard initiative, saying Be Heard addresses the unique set of circumstances that those in high-performance sport encounter.

“We know the pressure of elite sport can be extremely demanding on players, coaches, and staff. The well-being of our high-performance staff and athletes has always been a top priority for Softball Australia. Be Heard can offer an extra layer of support for those who face these unique challenges in the elite sport environment.”

AIS Director People Development and Wellbeing Matti Clements said the AIS had launched Be Heard this year to enhance wellbeing support, especially for those dealing with negative experiences.

“No one should feel the burden of bottling-up information about unacceptable incidents or practices during their time in high performance sport,” Clements said.

If you’re not sure where to go for support, AIS Be Heard is the best place to start. There’s opportunities to discuss things anonymously if you feel more comfortable. What matters most is you know there’s support available if, and when, you are ready to reach out.

“By contacting AIS Be Heard, you will be assisted by an independent integrity provider who can help you with the most appropriate support for your needs

No matter how long ago something may have happened, you will be heard.

The AIS Be Heard website details some of the issues high-performance athletes, coaches, and staff can face and how they can help. It can be anonymous and there are no obligations. Those seeking support are in control of how they would like their concerns handled.
