Celebrating James English: 2024 Vivienne Triplett Umpire of the Year Award Winner

Softball Australia congratulates James English on his unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions to Australian softball as an umpire. James was announced as the prestigious 2024 Vivienne Triplett Umpire of the Year Award at Softball Australia’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday 26 October 2024. This accolade not only highlights his remarkable achievements on the diamond but also emphasises his extensive impact within the softball community spanning over more than two decades.

A Journey of Excellence

James currently holds WBSC Level 6 accredited umpire status, with over 20 years of experience as an umpire in New South Wales, James has built a distinguished career marked by continuous growth and exemplary service. He has proven himself on both national and international stages, showcasing his skills and dedication to the sport.

James's recent appointments speak volumes about his capabilities. He recently officiated at the 2024 WBSC XVII Women's Softball World Cup in Italy, where he played a pivotal role as the 2nd base umpire in the Bronze Medal game, a testament to his proficiency at the highest levels of competition. Additionally, his involvement in the 2023 WBSC U18 Women's Softball World Cup Oceania Qualifier and the 2023 Men's Softball World Cup Oceania Qualifiers in Pago Pago, further illustrate his international experience and commitment to the game.

On home soil, James's contributions are no less impressive, he has been an essential figure in national appointments, serving as both an assessor and plate umpire in the Open Women playoff finals and as an assessor for the Open Men’s category. His leadership within the state is equally notable, having taken on roles such as UIC for the U18 Women and Deputy for the U18 Men, along with umpiring at the U23 Men State Championship.

A Mentor and Advocate for Umpires

Beyond his officiating duties, James is a dedicated member of the National Umpiring Committee, where he leads initiatives for umpire development. He plays a crucial role in preparing umpires for WBSC assessments, contributing significantly to the growth of both emerging and established officials.
