Softball Australia congratulates Scott Sunley on being appointed as the Steelers Head Coach ahead of the Group Stage of the Men’s Softball World Cup coming up in June in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Sunley is no stranger to international softball, with experience from his time as assistant coach for the championship-winning U23 Men’s World Cup team in 2023 along with the 2023 Under 18 Men’s World Cup team. On the recent domestic front, Sunley was head coach of Queensland’s 2024 National Championship winning Under 23 Men’s team and assistant coach of the 2023 National Championship team also.

With a career spanning 33 years and 8 years as an Aussie Steeler (Player #40), Sunley has a wealth of knowledge in Men’s Softball. His coaching experience is spread across every age group, with significant contributions at all levels of the sport. In 2014 Sunley was inducted into the Softball Queensland Hall of Fame.

In reaction to his appointment, Sunley said “I’m incredibly excited and privileged to be joining the Aussie Steelers family as Head Coach. Following Laing is an honour and something that I don’t take on lightly. I have always had an incredible respect for Laing and his commitment to excellence. If we continue to work hard, make smart decisions, and understand that you can always learn from the game then we can continue the success that has been built over the past few years. I’m extremely excited for what’s to come in 2024 and beyond.”

Looking ahead: Softball Australia are in planning and preparation mode, with the 2024 Group Stage the first obstacle in defence of the Steelers’ 2022 World Cup victory.
