Game 31: NSW v QLD 11:30AM AEDT

QLD 5 def NSW 3
QLD: 5R 5H 2E
NSW: 3R 5H 1E

Queensland hand New South Wales their first defeat of the tournament, scoring four in the seventh to clinch a late comeback win. It was another close encounter between the two sides, and incredibly the biggest win, as NSW had previously won both meets by just the one run. NSW took advantage of an error in the first, as Talea Tonga made it home to bank the valuable early run. QLD found a reply in the third on a sacrifice fly. NSW then found their way in front again in the fourth with two scoring singles, and then it was down to the defences as the two sides played out two more scoreless innings. Emma Williams found her way home to light the fire for QLD, before Rhiannon Smith’s double scored two and a sacrifice fly scored Raine Eastcott to make it 5-3. Bridie Nicol stepped up in the middle for QLD to end the game with three straight strike outs and put QLD into the Grand Final.

SA 6 def VIC 2
SA: 6R 7H 1E
VIC: 2R 6H 5E

South Australia kept their momentum going after a late charge into the finals yesterday, taking down Victoria 6-2 to advance. Olivia Durham took nine strike outs as SA kept VIC scoreless in six innings. Tara Lord made it home on all three ABs, while Chloe Davis, Georgia Mason and Zoe Marrich combined for 3RBIs. In the seventh, the VIC bases were loaded as Tahuna Rhind-Luke stepped up to bat, but SA played it wise against the recent U18 National Championships Best Batter award winner, allowing VIC to score on an intentional walk. Lily McKenner then managed to score Abbie Berkelmans while becoming the second out, and the SA fielders handled the final out in due course.

Game 33: NSW v SA 2:00PM AEDT

NSW 10 def SA 1
NSW: 10R 9H 1E
SA: 1R 3H 4E

A six-run third inning has helped New South Wales book their place in the Grand Final against Queensland. Following a 0-0 opening inning, NSW scored first thanks to Josie Howlett’s single to score Andi Lau in the bottom of the second. Keeping SA to a third-straight scoreless bat, NSW started the third looking to work their way into the game, as Talea Tonga made it on-base on a first-ball bunt, followed by Maddi Durnell’s sacrifice bunt. Tonga made it home on a fielding error, before Kate Luyten’s double to score Milla Durnell turned on the heat. SA managed just one in response, before NSW bagged another three in the fourth, triggering the runs-ahead-rule in the fifth. Markayla Butler and Tayla Moore shared stints in the centre, taking two strike outs each and allowing a combined total of three hits.

Game 34: QLD v NSW 4:30PM AEDT

QLD 3 def NSW 2
QLD: 3R 5H 3E
NSW: 2R 6H 1E

Queensland secure the Esther Deason Shield in a nail-biting eight-inning thriller to wrap up the Under 16 National Championships at Waverley, Victoria. It was a pitcher’s duel through the first five innings, as the pitchers traded strike outs and both teams struggled to get on-base. The scoring deadlock finally broke in the sixth as Molly Gill hit a single to score Kate Luyten, with Josie Howlett sitting poised to score from third base. That gave QLD the task to find two runs with only two innings to go, but they replied with the last effort in the bottom of the sixth on a Raine Eastcott single that brought Emma Williams and Sophie Rantanen home.

All-square at 2-2 it remained locked into the eighth inning, where NSW were unable to take advantage of the runner starting on second and were retired with two more strike outs and a flyball caught by Isabella Watson. QLD just had to score to win, and with two outs, Rantanen stepped up to hit a single and score Darcy Gurrieri-Hyland from second base.
