Steelers fly out of the gates in brilliant World Cup start

Published Sat 26 Nov 2022

Australia has cleared the first hurdle in their World Cup campaign, comfortably beating Denmark 7-0 at Rosedale Park.

A three-run first inning, team-first hitting and a solid pitching outing from both Adam Folkard and Jack Besgrove proved too much for the Danes, giving the Steelers a perfect start.

The Steelers put together six hits through the first four innings, with Nick Shailes, Josh McGovern, Josh White and Brendon O'Byrne contributing with the bat. Shailes went 1.000, plating four runners with his single to centre-field and two sacrifice fly balls.

O'Byrne went 2-2 with a double, single and a walk in a solid outing for the West Australian.

The game was sealed in the sixth inning with Callum Beashel's single the cherry on top of a solid one-hit two-walk outing.

No report would be complete without highlighting the efforts of World Cup debutant Jack Besgrove who put everyone on notice with his ten-strike out two-hit outing. Besgrove relieved Folkard who came out of the game part-way through the third inning having struck out four and giving up two hits.

Steelers Head Coach Laing Harrow was pleased with every part of the team's performance, saying "It was great to see the guys kick off the World Cup with a win. We scored early and kept up the offensive pressure throughout the game and the combined shut out from Adam and Jack was just another showcase of their talent."

The Steelers will look to take their momentum into tomorrow's game against second-ranked Japan tomorrow at 6pm NZDT. Japan were dominant in their first game against South Africa with the final result ending 11-0.
